Any intelligent fool can make things bigger, more complex, and more violent. It takes a touch of genius -- and a lot of courage -- to move in the opposite direction. The capacity of the human mind for swallowing nonsense and spewing it forth in violent and repressive action has never yet been plumbed. Perseverance is more prevailing than violence; and many things which cannot be overcome when they are together, yield themselves up when taken little by little. The practice of violence, like all action, changes the world, but the most probable change is to a more violent world.
